Forestry

After work session presentations and discussion on March 11 and April 22, 2019, the Board of Aldermen adopted a Forestry Plan on April 22, 2019.  A contract with Gamma Tree Services to execute Phase 1 of the plan was approved at the April 8, 2019 Board of Aldermen meeting and the work was executed later in the year.

As explained in this update, Phase 2 was scheduled to take place in 2020, but was then postponed due to budgetary cutbacks related to COVID-19. The Streets Division removed dead ash trees in 2020 and will continue those efforts in 2021. However, there was no funding for replacement trees.

The 2021 budget reinstated funding, so removals and replacements are moving forward. On behalf of the City of Des Peres, Gamma Tree began removing 57 ash trees on September 8th, and work will continue into October. Streets Staff will grind out the stumps and mark new planting locations with survey stakes in the coming weeks. Gamma will plant approximately 125 new trees later this fall, replacing not only the 57 they removed, but also ash trees removed by Streets staff last year when there was no funding for replacement. Phase 3 is included in the proposed FY 2022 budget.

For an explanation of how Street Trees are owned by the City, please see the article on page 5 of the January 2021 Newsletter.

EAB FLYER 5-9-19

You may have seen one of these signs on a tree in your neighborhood.  This is part of our effort to educate the public on the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), and the need to remove ash trees from our urban forest.  More detailed information is available in the Forestry Plan and from other agencies such as the Missouri Dept. of Agriculture and the Missouri Dept. of Conservation
